Do Advocates Peter Madereka and Tadey Lister Mlemeta Have a Personal Grudge Against Pauline Gekul?

ADELAUDIUS MAKWEGA — MBAGALA

Mwanakwetu of Mbagala had decided to put the matter concerning Ms. Pauline Gekul aside for the time being.

However, some residents of Babati later contacted him to share their views on the issue.

During their discussions, some of them expressed their opinions about Advocate Peter Madereka and Advocate Tadey Lister Mlemeta, saying:

“Advocate Peter Madereka and your relative, Advocate Tadey Lister Mlemeta, have no solid arguments. They should be ashamed of themselves and stop fighting the young woman, Pauline Gekul. Their actions serve no purpose.”

The residents recalled that Advocate Tadey Lister Mlemeta had previously contested for a parliamentary seat through CHADEMA in Babati Urban Constituency. According to their account, his nomination was rejected by the National Electoral Commission, which, in their view, contributed to Ms. Pauline Gekul securing a seat in Parliament.

The residents asked:

“In several constituencies, CCM candidates were elected unopposed. Why should the rejection of Tadey Lister Mlemeta’s nomination as a CHADEMA candidate be treated as a fault for which Ms. Gekul must bear the blame?”

These are among the questions raised by residents of Babati as they discuss the matter involving Ms. Pauline Gekul and the roles of Advocates Peter Madereka and Tadey Lister Mlemeta in the ongoing debate.

The residents further questioned why Ms. Gekul should be held responsible for a decision to disqualify a particular candidate from participating in an election without first considering the circumstances and procedures surrounding that decision.

Some of the people who spoke to Mwanakwetu claimed that Ms. Gekul and Advocate Tadey Lister Mlemeta had previously belonged to CHADEMA. According to their account, disagreements began to emerge after Ms. Gekul moved to CCM.

They said the two had previously been close and expressed surprise that their former relationship had apparently become a source of political tension.

“How can people who were once close and considered friends turn into enemies today?” they asked.

In support of their arguments, the residents raised several questions:

  • Why did Pauline Gekul decide to join CCM?
  • Is it true that Ms. Gekul was elected unopposed?
  • On what grounds was Ms. Gekul appointed Deputy Minister?
  • Why, during the 2025 elections, did Advocate Tadey Lister Mlemeta not contest the Babati Urban parliamentary seat again through CHADEMA or another political party?

In the residents’ view, these questions should be discussed in the context of the political circumstances and electoral procedures rather than placing all the blame on Ms. Gekul.

Some of the people who spoke to Mwanakwetu further alleged that Advocates Peter Madereka and Tadey Lister Mlemeta were pursuing the debate surrounding Ms. Gekul because of personal differences.

The residents also discussed allegations involving young men who were reportedly subjected to an incident involving the insertion of a bottle. They referred to a medical form, which they identified as Form No. 3, claiming that its contents raised questions about the allegations made by the young men.

They further alleged that Advocate Tadey Lister Mlemeta possessed the form and was capable of reading English. However, they questioned why, in their view, he was not providing what they considered to be an accurate interpretation of its contents.

The residents added that, according to their account, a report by the Commission for Human Rights and Good Governance suggested that the young men had not been subjected to the alleged act.

The residents continued to question the role of the two advocates in the matter involving Ms. Gekul, stating:

“Criminal offences are investigated by the relevant authorities, and decisions on prosecution are made in accordance with the law. Why do Advocates Tadey Lister Mlemeta and Peter Madereka appear to be giving this matter so much attention? Are there other reasons behind their positions?”

These remarks reflect the concerns and opinions of some Babati residents. However, the claims of personal animosity remain allegations and should not be treated as established facts without supporting evidence.
