The hopes of thousands of residents in Tarime District to gain access to safe and clean water are becoming a reality as the Nyandurumo Water Treatment Plant reaches the final stages of construction.
This was revealed by the Mara Regional Commissioner, Colonel Evans Alfred Mtambi, during his inspection tour of development projects in Tarime District on July 20, 2026. He was accompanied by members of the Regional Security and Defence Committee.
While inspecting the projects, Colonel Mtambi emphasized the importance of close cooperation among government leaders, technical experts, contractors, and local communities to ensure that all government-funded projects are completed on schedule and begin delivering the intended services to citizens.
Speaking at the Nyandurumo Water Treatment Plant construction site, Colonel Mtambi expressed satisfaction with the project's progress and stressed that there should be no further delays in completing it.
"I understand this project is valued at approximately TZS 401 million. So far, TZS 379 million has already been disbursed and utilized, leaving a balance of only TZS 22 million. That is a relatively small amount. We have already eaten the whole cow—only the tail remains. I want to see this project completed immediately," Colonel Mtambi said.
He explained that once completed, the project will significantly improve access to safe and clean drinking water for approximately 50,367 residents in the wards of Bomani, Tunwa, and Nyandoto. The project is expected to enhance public health, improve community well-being, and support local economic activities.
During the meeting, residents living near the project site appealed to the government to include their communities in the water supply network. Responding to their request, Colonel Mtambi said the government had received the proposal and would consider it, while also revealing plans for another major water project that will benefit even more communities in the surrounding areas.
Meanwhile, the Managing Director of MUWASA, Ms. Esther Gilyoma, said construction of the water treatment plant officially began on January 26, 2024, and is expected to be completed by December 31, 2026.
She noted that the project forms part of the government's broader efforts to strengthen water services across the Mara Region by ensuring that residents have access to water that meets national public health and quality standards.
A water treatment plant is a specialized facility designed to purify water drawn from natural sources such as rivers, springs, dams, and wells, making it safe for human consumption and domestic use.
The treatment process removes dirt, sediment, suspended particles, and—depending on the technology used—reduces or eliminates bacteria and other disease-causing microorganisms. As a result, water treatment plants play a vital role in improving water quality, protecting public health, and ensuring communities have reliable access to safe drinking water.
The completion of the Nyandurumo Water Treatment Plant is expected to mark a significant milestone in expanding access to clean and safe water for thousands of residents in Tarime District, while supporting the Government of Tanzania's commitment to providing reliable water services to all citizens.
