We Value the Contribution of Journalists

Adeladius Makwega – TARIME

The District Commissioner of Rorya, Honorable Khalifan Haule, has commended journalists in the Mara Region for their good work, saying they should continue with that spirit in order to build the nation of Tanzania wholeheartedly.

“We respect and value your contribution to this work, as currently the media is a key pillar in building our nation.”

These remarks were made on May 22, 2026, in Tarime District during the commemoration of World Press Freedom Day in the Mara Region. The event brought together more than 100 journalists from all districts of the Mara Region.

Earlier, Honorable Haule launched the Mara Region Journalists’ Fund, where each member contributes 5,000 Tanzanian shillings per month. These funds are intended to assist journalists who face challenges.

Speaking at this brief event, the Chairman of the Mara Region Press Club, Mr. Jacob Mugini, said that the national celebrations of World Press Freedom Day were held in Arusha. He urged journalists in the Mara Region to maintain unity in serving the journalism profession in Tanzania and worldwide.

World Press Freedom Day is celebrated every year on May 3 to recognize and appreciate the contribution of journalists around the world, many of whom have worked under dangerous conditions, with some being killed or permanently injured while on duty.

This day was officially recognized by the United Nations in 1993 through UNESCO and has been commemorated annually since then.

“In the 10-year period from 2016 to 2026, statistics indicate that 1,000 journalists and media workers have been killed worldwide while on duty, with the highest numbers in the Middle East, Ukraine, and Sudan.”

Meanwhile, in Mara Region, the weather in Tarime town is currently 26°C, humidity at 20%, a 62% chance of rain, and winds blowing at 5 km/h.
