We Are Sent to Live the Mission of the Ascended Christ

Adeladius Makwega – Musoma

“We celebrate the Ascension of the Lord. The eternal Word of God, who became human in Jesus, preached, died, and rose again so that we might receive salvation. Now He is in the eternal presence of the Father, but before the Lord ascended into heaven, He remained here on earth for forty days. He met with His disciples and taught them again. When the appointed time came, He returned to God while commissioning His disciples to go on mission.

He told His disciples:

‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.’

Today, we too are sent to bear witness to Christ wherever we go, with the assurance and comfort of Jesus’ promise that He will be with us always until the end of time.”

This is a short excerpt from a homily by Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle on Sunday, May 17, 2026, who is the Prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization (formerly Propaganda Fide) of the Catholic Church, responsible for evangelization worldwide and headquartered in the Vatican.

My reader, to enrich this Sunday, Mwanakwetu has prepared a poem on the Ascension of the Lord:

Today we sing with joyful voice, our Lord has risen high,
The Word of God eternal, came down from heaven’s sky.
In Jesus He was living, He taught, He died, He rose,
That all may find salvation through love He freely shows.

Now seated up in heaven, beside the Father’s throne,
In everlasting glory, His majesty is known.
Exalted in His justice, the victor over death,
He opened up the pathway to life with every breath.

Before He rose in glory, He walked with us below,
For forty days He taught them the truth they came to know.
He gathered all His loved ones, His disciples strong and true,
And filled their hearts with teaching, a faith to guide them through.

And when the time was ready, He journeyed to the sky,
Yet did not leave us empty, nor bid His church goodbye.
He sent His faithful followers to reach the distant lands,
To call all souls to freedom, held in His loving hands.

“All power has been given in heaven and on earth,
Go teach the nations everywhere of faith and second birth.
Baptize them in the Name of Father, Spirit, Son,
And teach them all I’ve shown you, till all the work is done.”

So we are sent out boldly to witness Christ today,
In every place we journey, in all we do and say.
For He is always with us until the end of days,
His promise stands forever, our hearts in hope we raise.

My reader, this comes from within the walls of the Catholic Church worldwide for its faithful.

While Mwanakwetu was preparing this article in the heart of Musoma town, the weather conditions were as follows: the temperature was 25°C, humidity was 10%, the chance of rain was 72%, and the wind was blowing at 3 km per hour.

Mwanakwetu, are you there? Remember:

“We are sent to live the mission of the Ascended Christ.”

I wish you a pleasant day.
