Adeladius Makwega – Lakeside Musoma
The Mara Regional Commissioner, Hon. Colonel Evansi Alfred Mtambi, on May 28, 2026, urged youth who receive various loans to remember to repay them so as to give others the opportunity to benefit from these loans.
He said this while launching a project involving about 40 youth, which is managed by BBT Fishing under the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries of the United Republic of Tanzania.
Speaking in his address, the Mara Regional Commissioner also requested the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries to remember Mara Region in the BBT Livestock project.
“I recognize that these are twin projects. These are the projects of Kurwa and Doto. Our region has very good livestock. Mara Region is friendly to livestock because livestock are at home here. This is the home of animals since ancient times; therefore, we must have quality meat. If you have brought Kurwa (BBT-Fishing), then bring along its twin Doto (BBT-Livestock).”
Speaking about the safety of fish cages and fish farming, Colonel Mtambi directed Musoma District to ensure there is adequate security and to decisively combat illegal fishing. He also instructed the Mara Regional Security Committee to strengthen security within Lake Victoria.
Earlier, at the beginning of his speech, Colonel Mtambi donated one fish cage already placed in the lake for motivated youth from Mara Region. Later, the youth were given four additional fish cages, where they went to sleep poor and woke up rich.
On her part, the Business Officer of the Tanzania Agricultural Development Bank (TADB), Ms. Glacial Maruguja, said that the bank provides loans in this project and has already issued loans for 99 cages, benefiting nearly 500 women and youth. She emphasized the importance of timely loan repayment.
Speaking on behalf of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, the ministry’s representative, Mr. Samweli Mdachi, said he had been sent to bring work and a smile of humanity, while thanking the Mara Regional Commissioner for doing justice to the BBT-Fishing project.
He added:
“The BBT-Fishing program is one of the two major programs of our ministry. We also have the BBT Livestock program. Our goal is to increase opportunities for income, employment, and food for Tanzanian communities.”
While welcoming the Mara Regional Commissioner, the Musoma District Commissioner, Hon. Juma Chikoka, said that Lake Victoria has been a major source of wealth for the residents of Mara Region; therefore, Musoma District holds the lake in high regard.
“This did not start today; it has been there for a long time. I sincerely thank the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries for introducing the BBT Fishing program for youth. I request it be understood that those who fish using hooks are our fellow Tanzanians and it is their right. This is traditional fishing, and we must respect it. However, they should fish at a distance of 100 meters from the cages to ensure the safety of all fishermen. This will help everyone benefit from the blue economy of Lake Victoria.”
Earlier, the Mara Regional Commissioner received a briefing on the BBT Fishing youth project in Mara Region, then proceeded to inspect the project in several cages within Lake Victoria. He had the opportunity to officially launch the project by feeding fish in the cages.
During the visit, fish inside and outside the cages were seen approaching Colonel Mtambi closely as he threw feed, as if welcoming him.
Witnessing this event, while the lake had strong waves, a Statistician from the Office of the Mara Regional Commissioner, Issa Rajabu Mbombwe, said:
“It turns out that the feed given to fish in cages also benefits fish outside the cages. This shows that modern aquaculture benefits the entire lake.”
Speaking by phone, the Member of Parliament for Musoma Urban, Hon. Mgore Miraji Kigera, expressed gratitude that her constituents had received BBT-Fishing loans, stating:
“The BBT-Fishing program, meaning Building a Better Tomorrow, is a Government of Tanzania initiative through the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries aimed at empowering youth and women to participate in the blue economy. It involves fish farming using modern technologies such as cages and ponds, as well as providing capital and subsidies to enable project establishment. It is also an important opportunity for the Lake Zone, involving projects funded by the government and various development partners.”
My reader, all this took place during the launch ceremony of the BBT Fishing project in Mara Region, which is the ‘Kurwa’ project. At the same time, the weather in Musoma was 21°C, humidity 60%, chance of rain 62%, and wind blowing at 14 km per hour.
Mwanakwetu, Are you there,? Remember:
“BBT Fishing Kurwa and BBT Livestock Doto.”
Wishing you a good day.
