Musoma MP Receives Government Praise and Citizens’ Concerns

“Before colonialism, the Musoma area was land inhabited by the Wakabwa, a group of Luo people who were the first to arrive and settle here. The first Germans arrived around 1910—two missionaries, Dominik and Paulo—who built residences and a school near the chief’s headquarters at Nyabange. They were later followed by the first German officer, nicknamed by locals ‘Bwana Sirusi.’ He served as a customs officer and is believed to have moved to Musoma for this role, as the town’s water depth was suitable for ships to dock.

Mr. Sirusi moved to present-day Musoma because the shoreline water depth was ideal for ships to arrive and anchor, which later contributed to the establishment of this district.”

This is the history of this old town, which is now the headquarters of Mara Region in northeastern Tanzania.

That was the past—what about now?

Early on April 24, 2026, the Parliament of the United Republic of Tanzania received responses from the government to several questions raised by the Member of Parliament for Musoma Urban, Ms. Mghore Miraj Kighera, regarding plans to revive industries in Mara Region.

The Government of the United Republic of Tanzania praised the MP for Musoma Urban, Hon. Mgore Miraji Kighera, for closely following up on industrial and trade development in Mara Region. The government aims to establish several new industries and revive two old factories that had stopped operating.

This was stated in Parliament on April 24, 2026, when the Ministry of Industry and Trade was responding to Basic Question No. 185 and several supplementary questions from MP Kighera Miraji.

“The priority of reviving industries has already begun, where the Musoma Textile Factory and the Musoma Dairy Factory are being restored, as the processes are nearing completion. The MP should not have doubts—this exercise is being handled professionally.”

While this was taking place in Parliament in Dodoma, the Musoma Urban MP received several complaints from residents of Makoko, requesting the urgent installation of an X-ray machine at the Mwalimu Nyerere Memorial Referral Hospital so it can begin operating. Currently, these services are provided at Musoma Municipal Hospital. The residents also requested the quick completion of a mortuary at the same hospital.

Responding to these concerns, Hon. Kighera Miraj said she is aware that recently the Permanent Secretary from the Ministry of Health visited the hospital and gave several directives. She added that she has taken note of the concerns and will forward them to the Ministry of Health for prompt action.

Residents of Kiara B also asked the MP to address challenges related to water pipes so that water services can reach their area. In response, Hon. Mgore said she has taken up the matter and will present it to the Musoma Water Authority (MUWASA) for action.

Meanwhile, residents of Mshikamano Street, led by Mr. Joseph Sese Warioba, stated that their main challenge is poor road accessibility in their area and requested improvements. Hon. Mghore Kighera Miraji said she has taken up the issue and it will be worked on.

At the time, the weather in Musoma was 27°C, humidity at 10%, a 56% chance of rain, and wind blowing at 8 km/h.
