“A scene of several motorcycles, with people getting on and off various motor vehicles including motorcycles, small cars, and buses. The setting is bushy, and the commotion suggests that something significant is happening nearby.”
Our reporter moves closer to the area and asks the driver to stop so he can find out whether there has been an accident or not.
He gets out of the car and meets two people: a young woman holding a bundle and an empty water container, and a young man waiting for her to get on a motorcycle taxi (bodaboda).
Judging by her appearance, the young woman seems to be about 19–20 years old. She is holding a road sign indicating Nyanjage Ward, located in Rorya District, Mara Region.
The reporter asks her, What is happening here?
“This is Nyanjage area in Rorya District. Gold deposits have been discovered, so we have come to seize the opportunity.”
The commotion continues as people disembark from vehicles, speaking various languages—many conversing in Sukuma, while others speak languages the reporter cannot identify. The noise of engines from cars and motorcycles fills the air.
After receiving this information, the reporter continues with his journey. Upon returning, he seeks more detailed information about the Nyanjage area—whether it is true that gold has been discovered there.
Gambales Samson Panga, the Mara Regional Officer in charge of Industry, Trade, and Investment, confirmed that it is true gold has been discovered in the area. The place has already begun to grow lively, and several services are now being provided.
“I visited Nyanjage on February 22, 2026, and some people have already started finding gold. At depths between 15 and 20 feet, a gold-bearing vein can be found.”
Mr. Gambales added that although this blessing has been found, there is also fraud taking place. Some opportunists are selling bags claimed to contain gold-bearing soil. Each bag is sold for between 10,000 and 15,000 Tanzanian shillings. While some bags do contain mineral-rich soil, others do not. Therefore, caution and sound judgment are necessary for anyone engaging in this activity.
Speaking on the matter, the Rorya District Executive Director, Advocate Msomi Abdul Omari Mtaka, said:
“Nyanjage is currently one of the most important investment areas in mining within our Rorya District Council. For a long time, Rorya District has only had small-scale miners. If this situation continues, we may eventually have a large mine, and as a District Council, we will gain a new and significant source of revenue. Most importantly, our Council will provide strong cooperation to the residents of this area.”
Overall, Mara Region is an area rich in gold resources, with several locations increasingly being identified as having substantial gold deposits.
Dear reader, are you there? Remember:
“Nyanjage to Become the Savior of Rorya District.”
