The Holy Spirit Guide Us to Recognize the Diverse Gifts in Others

Adeladius Makwega-Mwisenge

“Today we celebrate the great feast of Pentecost. The Easter season reaches its climax in the coming of the Holy Spirit—the fulfillment of Jesus’ promise to his disciples. The Gospel takes us back to Easter Sunday, when the risen Lord visited his disciples, who were hiding behind closed doors in the upper room. There, Jesus gave them his gift of peace and breathed the Holy Spirit upon them so that, through them, others might also receive forgiveness.

On this feast, the first reading from the Acts of the Apostles gives Saint Luke’s account of what happened on the day of Pentecost. They were all gathered together in one house when suddenly a sound came from heaven like a strong rushing wind, filling the entire house. Then tongues, as of fire, appeared and rested on each of them. The Holy Spirit enabled them to proclaim the Good News in different languages, and everyone understood them.

This is exactly what we need today, my brothers and sisters. We pray that the Holy Spirit may come upon us and breathe His wind into us, guiding us toward peace and the attainment of forgiveness, and also granting us the grace to recognize the diverse gifts in one another, leading us toward unity and solidarity.

Come, Holy Spirit, come.”

These are a few key points from the homily of Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, Prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization of the Catholic Church, which is responsible for spreading the Gospel throughout the world. This message was echoed both at the Vatican and at Mwisenge Parish in the Catholic Diocese of Musoma, where during the homily a long letter from leaders of the Catholic laity in Tanzania was read, each paragraph supported by references and quotations from the Bible.

Later, several catechumens were baptized, and all the faithful renewed their baptismal promises.

In celebration of Pentecost, Mwanakwetu has prepared this poem for you, dear reader.

Today we celebrate, Pentecost so divine,
The Spirit descends in power, a gracious gift that shines,
Jesus’ promise fulfilled, for all His faithful band,
Easter reaches its fullness, by grace from His hand.

The Gospel reminds us, of that joyful day,
The Lord truly risen, bringing light to their way,
Though doors had been locked, in fear and in doubt,
He breathed peace upon them, His Spirit poured out.

The Acts tell the story, as Luke once declared,
All gathered together, in hope as they shared,
A wind rushed in ძლfully, filling all space,
Tongues of fire descended, each one embraced.

Today we also pray, as one family in heart,
That the Spirit may bless us, His gifts to impart,
To guide us in peace, and forgiveness together,
Come Holy Spirit, come—be our light forever.

While these celebrations take place within the walls of the Church during the Feast of Pentecost, the weather in the town of Musoma is warm, ranging between 21°C and 28°C. The humidity is at 0%, the chance of rain stands at 51%, and the wind is blowing at 13 km/h.

Mwanakwetu, are you there? Remember:

“May the Holy Spirit guide us to recognize the diverse gifts in one another.”

Wishing you a good day.
